Win 7, is it still supported?

#1 Post by godel »

The download finally finished, the setup software was run, and the game was attempted. Shut down fast.
So where is that error file you need? and what is its name? I was trying to run last September's 4.7.1.
I have been away from here for a while and have forgotten what I need.

This is a new to me laptop. It does not yet seem to have any memory problems unlike the win 10 desktop.

Win 7 is supported, I play it just fine (0.4.7 & 0.4.8 RC).

The client and server logs are found in some local app folder (cant access my computer now, this is a phone). Search in forum or google for it.

Here is the error log.
What is wrong? Is there anything I can do?

You can try updating your graphics drivers. If that doesn't work, you probably need a better video card.

it is a laptop, upgrade of hardware not possible. I will check the drivers. Does not look hopeful.

@Godel, what was your machine specs again?
I only have weak understanding of game textures and graphic cards, but it seems so weird that your machine can't load the less than 100 MB of images of FO, even if all memory for graphics is shared with the CPU.

It's probably not the total size of all textures, but rather the size of that particular image file, which is 1280x960, which would need about 5 MB in a single texture at 32 bits per pixel. It might help to replace that file with a smaller image, possibly the same one resized...

it is a laptop, so video card upgrade is not possible.
It has good main memory for a win 7 machine, 8gig if I recall correctly.
and a 1t hard drive. But gets a zero in graphics for the power rating of the machine.

It is a ThinkPad E545. Win 7 professional. 8 G installed ram. 64 bit os. AMD A6-5350 APU with Radeon HD graphics. 2.9Ghz.

I like this laptop, it has many usb 3.0 ports, decent graphics for many uses (decent resolution) good key arrangement, many other nice things.
I suspect you can kiss the Windows game sessions goodbye as you are now zero for 2 machines for me.
Windows Experience score:
Calculations per second: 5.4
Memory operations per second: 7.2
graphics: 1.0 (Desktop performance for Windows Aero)
gaming graphics 1.0 3d and gaming graphics performance)
Primary hard disk data transfer rate: 5.9
All the above are ratings relative to some standard computer of some age.
Effectively the 1.0 in the graphics category pulls down the overall score, which is determined by the lowest score in Win 7,

Yeah the other had memory problems your program detected, and windows memory test does not. It actually has shown a few errors that might be memory related in the time I have had it. Reallocate around those?? mark sectors bad and try again?

That's strange. The AMD APU should be sufficiently capable of running FO. My main Windows machine (where I produce the Windows builds) has an AMD APU too, and FO runs perfectly fine on it. Of course, that's an A10-7860K Radeon R7, but still... contrary to the driver mess with Intel integrated graphics, driver support for AMD APUs has always been decent, or so I thought.

Even my other Windows machine, which is most definitely lower spec than you AMD A6 (an ancient Pentium dual core, with a cheap entry level Geforce graphics card - your APU should easily beat that setup) and has still XP, can run FO. Maybe not exactly smoothly, but it runs.

So IMO should be able to run FO on your AMD system... :?

Couldn't there be a fallback added, that uses a black background if the texture cannot be loaded properly?

Weird.

I run FO on a W7 2012 laptop, with switchable graphic cards: Intel HD 3000 (integrated, for light application) and AMD Radeon 7670 (for "heavy" application). The latest driver released for this dual system was in... 2012.
It's not possible to install the dedicated driver for one or the other card (way more recent), it has to be a specific driver for the dual graphic cards.

FO (2018-09-01) launches and runs perfectly on both cards (I choose the Intel 3000, because there are minor visual glitches with the Radeon).

So, you should be able to run FO easily on your system. Maybe try to disable all the fancy but greedy display FX (Aero and all kind of that stuff).
I release every updated file under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license.

I would try. I sadly am in a bit of a rush out the door: url to how to disable that stuff?

At some point, there's no sense in adding fallbacks because the missing functionality is too basic for the game to be playable without it. Not being able to load a texture is probably past that point.

Fair enough.
