FreeOrion is available as precompiled point releases for Windows XP, statically-linked Linux binaries, and as a disk image for MacOSX. The source code may also be downloaded and compiled for Linux, WinXP or MacOSX.

Windows XP

Point releases for Windows XP including most necessary art, data, sound and libraries, can be downloaded from SourceForge. Note that WinXP Service Pack 2 and the .NET Framework 2.0 are required.

The .NET Framework 2.0 can be installed by by running Windows Update, selecting "Custom", then "Optional, Software", then ".NET Framework 2.0". Alternatively, it may be downloaded from Microsoft directly.

Windows 2000

The Windows XP Freeorion v0.3.1-RC5 point release has been reported to run on Windows 2000.

Linux

A statically linked binary of a recent version (as of mid-August 2007) is available. See this forum post for a link. This or similar binaries have been tested on Debian Edge and OpenSuSE 10.2, and may work on other distributions as well.

Mac OS X

A post RC6 (as of Nov 20. 2007) partially statically/dynamically linked universal binary of FreeOrion is available for download. It is bundled together with an installer for all the necessary shared libraries.

You can download the disk image here.

System versions prior to 10.4 (Tiger) are not supported at the moment.

It has been tested with Mac Os X Tiger 10.4.11 only so it can be that you will encounter problems running it with a different version. Should FreeOrion refuse to start up, have a look at this forum post. If it runs on your system without an problems and you have a version different from 10.4.11 or if it doesn't work at all then it would be nice if you could drop a note into this forum thread stating the exact version of Os X you're running and whether it is on Intel or PowerPC architecture.
