[[FreeOrion]] does not yet have official system requirements, and what it currently needs is highly likely to fluctuate throughout the development.

See [https://github.com/freeorion/freeorion/blob/master/README.md the README] for the latest system requirements.

As a rough guideline, earlier versions of FreeOrion have been reported to ''run'' on a 600MHz machine with 128MB internal memory, however this did not constitute a good playing experience; you will want to have more.  Additionally, FO uses [[OpenGL]], meaning you should have a 3D accelerator card.  A screen resolution of 1024x768 or larger is very strongly reccomended, though the game can be run, awkwardly, at lower resolutions.

As of [https://github.com/freeorion/freeorion/releases/tag/v0.4.8 v.0.4.8], FreeOrion requires an OpenGL 2.1 capable graphic card and a display with a minimum resolution of at least 800x600.

If you have experience running it on a particular system and thought it was a bit slow, please write your requirements here so we can consolidate them into some guideline of reasonable specifications.

FreeOrion requires at least Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or later, Mac OSX 10.9 or later or any reasonably recent Linux distribution on x86 compatible processors. Other operating systems and architectures have reported to be working by users, but are not actively supported by the FreeOrion project.

You will likely need as an operating system either Linux or Windows XP Service Pack 2.  FreeOrion v0.3.1-RC5 has been reported to run on Windows 2000, though it is not officially supported.  Earlier versions of Windows will likely not work, including earlier versions of Windows XP including SP1 and SP2-beta.

Ports to other systems are plausible but require developers from them to put in the time to see it ported.
